Hello everybody, I currently got a problem with the Microsoft licensing at Server 2012 R2. We are using a Citrix 7.6 farm with several servers. I've created a Windows 2012 license server and I've activated the user CALs. Afterwards I've created a GPO with the settings to point to this license server and to use the licensing mode 'Per user'. My problem is, that I now get the following two entries in the Event Viewer and no one can connect to the published applications. 1 Error The RD Licensing grace period has expired and the service has not registered with a license server with installed licenses. A RD Licensing server is required for continuous operation.

A Remote Desktop Session Host server can operate without a license server for 120 days after initial start up. 2 Warning The Remote Desktop Session Host server does not have a Remote Desktop license server specified. To specify a license server for the Remote Desktop Session Host server, use the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool. I checked already the Registry of the server and I can find there the correct Registry Key for defining the license server and the licensing mode.
Does someone has an idea what I've done wrong or if I'm missing something? Thank you very much for your help!

The error looks pretty clear -- your server doesn't seem to be able to see the license server. Pull up the RD Licensing Diagnoser and see if you see the same error. You should be able to see the number of licenses, the license server, the mode, and the actual server name down at the bottom. You might have some conflicting policies or a type-o in the server name.
Check here to make sure everything is correct. If things are correct, I would start looking at general network connectivity. If you specified a name, ping it -- make sure it resolves and is reachable. If it's reachable, use telnet to make sure you can get through to the licensing server.

From time to time it becomes necessary to regenerate temporary terminal server licenses. Whether it be a genuine error which is preventing you from using temporary licenses or the fact that someone 'forgot' to purchase TSCALS within the grace period allowed by Microsoft. In my experience the below will fix 99.9% of problems surrounding temporary licenses and let you get back up and running with enough time to source some legitimate TSCALS. *Note: These only apply to temporary licenses. If you are running a system with permanent TSCALS make sure you fully back your licenses up before doing this. If you don't you will have to call the Microsoft Clearing House to get your TSCALS back.
